Could the G7 climate club work? Lessons learned from climate coalitions
The international climate negotiations are increasingly focusing on implementing the Paris Agreement and driving up ambition. At COP27 in Egypt a Mitigation Work Programme will be negotiated with the aim to close the emissions gap. At the same time, climate initiatives and coalitions have proliferated outside the UNFCCC in recent years. This year the G7 also decided to establish a climate club to accelerate climate action. This UI paper examines some lessons learned from climate coalitions and the implications of these for international climate cooperation in general, and the establishment of a climate club in particular.
