Senior Associate Fellow

Dr. Börje Ljunggren is Senior Associate Fellow within UI's Asia Programme.

Börje has dedicated practically his entire professional life to Asia and has been stationed in four countries in the region. At the same time, Börje Ljunggren has conducted research on Asia and earned a PhD in political science with a dissertation on the reform process in Indochina.

From 2002 to 2006, he was Sweden’s ambassador to China, and in the mid-1990s, he was ambassador to Vietnam. He has served as Deputy Director-General at Sida and head of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs’ Asia Department.

After formally leaving the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2007, Börje Ljunggren has been the Ministry's coordinator for the Stockholm China Forum, chairman of SEB’s Asia Council, and a board member of Lund University and the Raoul Wallenberg Institute. He has also been an advisor to the China Center at the Stockholm School of Economics. He is a fellow at the Harvard University Asia Center, a writer and a lecturer. He is the author of China – Our Time’s Drama (2nd edition, 2009) and The Chinese Dream – Challenges for China and the World (2017), and co-editor of Vietnam: Navigating a Rapidly Changing Economy, Society, and Political Order (Harvard Asia Center/Harvard University Press, 2023).
