Paul is an Associate Research Fellow at the Asia Programme at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs (UI)

Paul holds a doctorate in Peace and Development Research from Gothenburg University’s School of Global Studies. His research focuses on the struggles for democracy and rights of minorities in authoritarian countries. His doctoral thesis examines the ‘Spring Revolution’ democracy movement against military rule in Myanmar, analyzing its inter-ethnic coalition building, the escalation from protest to armed resistance, and the movement’s creation of governance in resistance areas. Paul has also worked in Cambodia and follows developments in international politics, human rights, and environmental issues in mainland Southeast Asia. Paul has served as a spokesperson for UNHCR’s Myanmar country office. As a journalist with independent news media in Myanmar and Cambodia, and a contributor to international media such as TIME Magazine, The Guardian, Foreign Policy, he has reported on armed conflict, the Rohingya genocide, humanitarian issues, illicit drug trade, and controversial natural resource exploitation.
