Myanmar in Transition: China and the Conflict in Kachin State
Myanmar has witnessed numerous uprisings since independence from the British in 1947. Discontent has been shaped by a variety of local and regional dynamics. The conflict in Kachin State is illustrative of this. Government infrastructure projects backed by Chinese investments have mobilised ethno-nationalist groups as well as civil society networks. How does regional power dynamics affect the democratic transition in Myanmar? Where are China-Myanmar relations heading?
