Mediating in wars – from Bosnia to Gaza

Mediating in wars – from Bosnia to Gaza

Mediating in wars is never easy, nor is it necessarily popular. Yet mediators are absolutely vital for bringing conflicts to an end and historically this has primarily been done behind closed doors, but in the age of social media it's hard to keep sensitive negotiations out of the public eye.

The war in Gaza has now gone on for 6 months, despite mediation efforts form various actors including Qatar.
What are the chances of reaching a cease fire, let alone peace?
It is always helpful to revisit other cases of mediation in major conflicts and see what those experiences can teach us. How does one mediate and negotiate truce and peace in armed conflicts? What role does a global actor like the United States play and will the dynamics in achieving peace in the Gaza war and future conflicts change as the world becomes more multipolar?
