The world's conflicts are increasingly taking place in the economic field. The world's conflicts are increasingly taking place in the economic field. When the power logic of geopolitics applies in the domains of the globalised market, one can speak of geoeconomics.
Europe has, in many ways, benefited from globalisation and from rules-based international co-operation, underpinned by American power. More recently, however, Europe has had to adapt to a new geoeconomic reality. It has been forced to adopt new investment review mechanisms and export controls; it has developed new strategies for promoting strategic technology; it has made more political use of the single currency; and it has begun to think about using foreign aid more strategically.
