Shrinking Space for Human Rights Defenders in Asia

Shrinking Space for Human Rights Defenders in Asia

On November 28, 2014 the Right Livelihood Award Foundation, the Swedish Institute of International Affairs (UI), Church of Sweden, Kvinna till Kvinna, Civil Right Defenders, Amnesty Sweden and CineMondo arranged a discussion with two of the 2014 Right Livelihood Award Laureates.

Many governments see civil society as a threat, and the political space of civil society organisations is shrinking all over the world. It is the organisations and actors working in the areas of justice, human rights and natural resources that are most severely hit by the various restrictions and threats.

Speakers:
Asma Jahangir, who will receive the Right Livelihood Award "…for defending, protecting and promoting human rights in Pakistan and more widely, often in very difficult and complex situations and at great personal risk.”
Basil Fernando / Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) who will be awarded the Right Livelihood Award "… for his tireless and outstanding work to support and document the implementation of human rights in Asia.”

The discussion was moderated by Anna Wieslander, Deputy Director of UI.
