Stockholm Seminar on Japan: Japan’s Green Industrial Policy since 2020: An Environmental Economics Perspective
In 2020, the Government of Japan declared its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, marking a significant shift in the country’s decarbonization policy. In this presentation, Dr. Hide-Fumi Yokoo introduced the current state of Japan’s "GX Policy".
The key concept for understanding the features of this policy is "climate policy meets industrial policy". He explained three policy instruments that are still under discussion in the policymaking process. Finally, he shared his interpretation of the policy from the perspective of environmental economics.
Hide-Fumi Yokoo is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Economics at Hitotsubashi University, Japan. His research focuses on the design and evaluation of environmental policy instruments, particularly in Asian countries. He employs economic theory, field surveys and experiments, and econometric analysis in his work. His research sites span various Asian countries, including India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Japan. From April 2024, he is spending one year as a guest researcher at the Environmental Economics Unit of the University of Gothenburg.
